Our Mission and Vision
Africana studies is an interdisciplinary field that explores the histories, cultures, languages, literatures and lived experiences of Africa, Black and African American experiences in the United States, and the broader African diaspora. Drawing on expertise across the humanities and social sciences, the Department of Africana Studies advances teaching, research, and engagement that deepen understanding of the diverse experiences, contributions, and connections of people of African descent around the world.
Through scholarship, collaboration, and community engagement, the department prepares students to think critically, engage thoughtfully, and contribute meaningfully to an interconnected world.
What We Do
Provide interdisciplinary undergraduate and graduate education that examines Africa, Black and African American experiences in the United States, and the broader African diaspora through multiple perspectives, preparing students to think critically about the world and their place within it.
Advance scholarship that explores the histories, cultures, languages, politics, societies, and lived experiences of Africa, Black and African American experiences in the United States, and the broader African diaspora while contributing new knowledge across disciplines.
Foster meaningful connections through public lectures, conferences, cultural events, community partnerships, and collaborative initiatives that extend learning beyond the classroom.
Create a vibrant academic community where students, faculty, alumni, and partners connect through mentorship, advising, experiential learning, and opportunities for personal and professional growth.
Our Story
The Department of Africana Studies was established in July 2026 through the reunification of Penn State’s Department of African American Studies and African Studies program. The reunification strengthens interdisciplinary collaboration by bringing together the study of Africa and Black and African American experiences in the United States within the broader field of Africana Studies.
Africana Studies builds on a long history at Penn State. From 1973 to 2012, African and African American Studies existed as a single academic department before becoming separate academic units. The reunified department continues that tradition while creating new opportunities for teaching, research, student engagement, and community impact.
